Ahmedabad: Tuesday brought some relief to people across the state with the mercury settling at a maximum of 45 degrees Celsius in Idar, Ahmedabad and Vadodara. It, however, saw an eight year old record being broken as Ahmedabad completed a ‘consistently hot’ week in which the maximum temperature continued to be as high as 45 degrees Celsius or above.
Kamaljit Ray, director of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Gujarat, said, “This the longest duration of mercury touching 45 degrees Celsius and above in Ahmedabad and continuing heat wave conditions. This phenomena last happened in the city in 2002.”
Whole state has been reeling under excessive heat wave conditions for one week, Ray said, adding, “This started on May 19 and have persisted since then. There has been little or no drop in the temperature which in Ahmedabad has remained above four degrees Celsius.”
Four more die of heat at AMC-run hospitals on Tuesday, taking the heat death toll in city to 38. Deputy health officer Bhavin Solanki said, “On Tuesday, 66 patients were admitted to AMC hospitals.”
